Our a/c recently went out, so we called Millenial a/c to come out.Our technicial Sal showed up on time as promised, he then quickly diagnosed our issue, and gave us a few options. We went with repair for now, I am now sitting in my house with ice cold air again!! Thank you again Sal! And when this old unit goes down again, we will call Millenial to install a new one.
Most AC problems give a warning before the system quits completely, and catching them early usually means a smaller repair. Call or text us if you notice any of these:
Warm or weak airThe fan runs but the air from the vents is not cold, or a few rooms never cool down.
Short cyclingThe system turns on and off every few minutes instead of running steady cycles.
Ice on the lines or coilFrost on the copper line or indoor coil usually points to an airflow or refrigerant problem.
Water where it should not beWater around the indoor unit or a ceiling stain under an attic unit often means a clogged drain line.
New noisesGrinding, squealing, buzzing or a hard click at startup can mean a failing motor, capacitor or loose part.
A higher SDG&E billA jump in your bill with no change in how you use the AC can mean the system is working too hard.
What happens on a repair visit
A good repair starts with finding the actual cause, not swapping parts until something works. On a typical AC repair visit we:
Listen first. What have you noticed, when did it start, and has it happened before?
Rule out the simple things. Thermostat settings, the breaker, the outdoor disconnect and the air filter.
Check airflow. Blower, filter and indoor coil, since many cooling problems start there.
Test the electrical parts at the outdoor unit: capacitor, contactor and fan motor.
Check refrigerant pressures and look for signs of a leak.
Explain what we found in plain language and give you your options, so you can decide what makes sense.
Common AC repairs
Most repair calls come down to a short list of parts. Some are quick fixes once they are found. A few are big enough that it is worth comparing the repair with a replacement before you decide.
Capacitor or contactor
Small electrical parts that start the compressor and the outdoor fan. Summer heat wears them out, and a failed capacitor is a classic reason an outdoor unit hums but won't start.
Clogged condensate drain
Dust and algae build up in the drain line. Many systems have a float switch that shuts the AC off before water overflows, so a clogged drain can look like a dead AC.
Dirty filter or coil
Restricted airflow cuts cooling and can freeze the indoor coil solid. Sometimes the fix is cleaning, not parts.
Refrigerant leak
An AC does not use up refrigerant. If the charge is low there is a leak somewhere, and a lasting repair finds it instead of just topping the system off.
Fan or blower motor
A failed outdoor fan lets the unit overheat and shut down. A failed indoor blower means little or no air from the vents.
Compressor
The heart of the system and the biggest repair. On an older AC, compare it with a replacement before you spend the money.
A note on older refrigerant
If your AC was installed before about 2010, it may use R-22. R-22 has not been produced or imported in the US since 2020, so recharging a leaking R-22 system keeps getting more expensive. Most systems from the 2010s use R-410A, which is still available for repairs. We will tell you which one your system uses and what that means for the repair.
How much does AC repair cost in Chula Vista?
It depends on what failed, and nobody can give you an honest number before looking at the system. So instead of a made-up range, here is what actually drives the cost of a repair:
The part. A capacitor or contactor is a small part. A fan motor, coil or compressor is a big one.
Refrigerant. Which type and how much the system needs. R-22 costs far more than newer refrigerants because it is no longer made.
Finding a leak. Tracking down a leak and fixing it takes more time than replacing a part you can see.
Access. An indoor unit in a tight attic takes longer to work on than one in a garage or a hall closet.
Warranty. Some parts may still be under the manufacturer's warranty, so have your paperwork or the install date handy.
We explain what we found and what each option involves, so you can decide whether the repair is worth it.
Repair or replace?
There is no single rule, but these questions help you decide:
How old is it? Many central AC systems last somewhere around 12 to 15 years, longer with regular maintenance.
How often has it broken down in the last two summers?
Is it an R-22 system with a leak? That usually tips the math toward replacing.
Is the repair a big share of what a new system would cost?
Are some rooms always uncomfortable even when it runs fine?
What is the $5,000 rule for AC?
Multiply the age of your system in years by the cost of the repair. If the result is over $5,000, replacing usually makes more sense than repairing. It is a rule of thumb, not a verdict: a newer system with one failed part is almost always worth fixing.
What is the 3-minute rule for air conditioners?
After your AC shuts off, wait about 3 minutes before turning it back on. That gives the pressures inside the system time to even out, so the compressor is not trying to start against high pressure, which is hard on it and can trip the breaker. Many thermostats build in this delay, so a short pause after you change the setting is normal.
A few things are worth a look first, and they can save you a visit:
Make sure the thermostat is set to Cool and the set temperature is below the room temperature. Replace its batteries if it uses them.
Check the breaker panel for a tripped AC or furnace breaker. If it trips again right away, leave it off and call us.
Look at the air filter. A clogged filter can freeze the coil and cut airflow to almost nothing.
Make sure the outdoor unit is not blocked by plants, a cover or yard storage.
Iced-up coil or lines? Set the thermostat to Off and the fan to On to let it thaw, then call. Running a frozen system can damage the compressor.
If it's time to replace
Sometimes the honest answer is that a repair is not worth it. If so, we will say so and show you replacement options side by side, including a heat pump that also handles heating. Here is what comes with every new AC system:
What comes with a new AC
Free smart thermostat or free first year of maintenance with every new AC system
10-year parts and 10-year labor warranty on new systems
Choose the free smart thermostat or the free first year of maintenance. Offers apply to new AC system installs by Millenial Air Conditioning. Ask for details with your quote.
We are based in Chula Vista and handle AC repair in Chula Vista (including Eastlake, Otay Ranch and Rolling Hills Ranch), Poway, Del Mar and La Jolla. East Chula Vista sits farther from the ocean than the bayfront, so homes in Eastlake, Otay Ranch and Rolling Hills Ranch lean on their AC harder on summer and early fall afternoons, which is exactly when worn parts give out. Near the coast in Del Mar and La Jolla, salt air is harder on outdoor coils and electrical parts. Calling at the first sign of trouble usually means a smaller fix.

Millennial AC did an outstanding job for us. They quickly diagnosed that our old 410a AC condenser had failed, found a replacement right away, and had it installed the very next day. Their crew was professional, efficient, and respectful of our home - they actually left everything cleaner than they found it. Pricing was fair and straightforward, with no surprises. I highly recommend Millennial AC and wouldn’t hesitate to use them again for any HVAC needs.

Call or text (619) 765-9611 and we will tell you the earliest time we have. If your AC is completely out, say so when you reach out, or pick "ASAP, it's not working" on the request form.
Why is my AC running but not cooling?
The most common causes are a dirty filter, a frozen coil, a failed capacitor or fan motor at the outdoor unit, or low refrigerant from a leak. Check the filter and the breaker first. If those look fine, it needs a technician.
Why is water leaking from my AC?
Your AC pulls moisture out of the air, and that water should leave through the condensate drain line. Water pooling around the indoor unit or dripping from a ceiling usually means the drain is clogged and should be cleared before it causes damage.
Can you fix an older R-22 system?
Often, yes. The question is whether it is worth it. If an R-22 system has a leak, the refrigerant alone gets expensive, so we will lay out the repair next to replacement options and let you decide.
Should I keep resetting the breaker if my AC trips it?
No. Reset it once. If it trips again right away, leave it off and call. A breaker that keeps tripping is protecting the system from an electrical or compressor problem, and repeated resets can make the damage worse.
What should I tell you when I reach out?
What the system is doing, when it started, roughly how old it is, and a photo of the label on the outdoor unit if you can get one. The model and serial number on that label tell us the age, size and refrigerant.
